Ducted Air Conditioning Installation Brisbane

If you're looking for the fastest and most efficient way to make your house or premises cool and comfortable, then installing ducted air conditioning is a great option.

Ducted air conditioning installation will effectively deliver cold air throughout an area, while also removing moisture from the air, this results in a cool and humidity free environment. Ducted air conditioners are ideal for large areas because they are available in capacities ranging from small (a single room) up to very big (a large showroom).

So that you can determine whether a ducted air conditioner is right for you, and to help you understand exactly how they work, below is a comprehensive guide on everything you need to know when it comes to ducted air conditioning systems.
We service ALL air conditioning brands including:

Benefits of ducted air conditioner installation

Capacity

This type of air conditioning can be sized to meet the needs of large spaces. Thanks to the ducts that are situated throughout an area or house, ducted air conditioning has the ability to cool very large spaces. If you compare the capacity of a ducted system to wall mount split systems, or portable air conditioning systems, you'll find that they are much more capable of successfully cooling big areas.

Take a look at any sizable office space or larger home and you'll usually find that their cooling method is ducted air conditioning - because of its larger capacity.

Zoning

Ducted air conditioners are perfect for large spaces - and one of the reasons for this is their ability to cool certain zones (otherwise known as areas). Ducted air conditioners are powerful systems that allow the user to designate a room - or a group of rooms - that need to be cooled. The user can turn on the system to cool multiple areas at once or choose specific spaces to cool.

Not only is this eco-friendly - but it can also save you significantly on power bills because you won't be paying to use the air conditioner in spaces where it is not needed.

Active Zoning

There are many options available now to have zone controllers that enable you to set different temperatures in different zones. The system then progressively adjusts the amount of conditioned air going to each zone based on the temperature it is sensing in that zone.

Some air conditioner manufacturers have this capability in their zone controllers or you can choose an aftermarket controller like My Air (from Advantage Air) or Air Touch (from Polyaire).

Smart Control

Smart control is when a system is linked to an app on a mobile phone or connected to smart home systems and/or voice assistants.

This feature allows users to adjust temperature settings, and switch on and off zones remotely. A smart system gives control over many more elements of your ducted air conditioning system, including detecting errors early, allowing weekly scheduling and coordinating with other smart features - like blinds and fans.

Discrete

Ducted air conditioning systems are a great choice when keeping aesthetics in mind. The visible parts of the system include just the thermostat itself and flat, unobtrusive vents placed throughout a house or area. When it comes to interior design, these vents look much better than wall mounted units.

Not only are ducted air conditioning systems unobtrusive, but they are quiet too.

Is Ducted air conditioning installation right for your home?

There are certainly many benefits of a ducted air conditioner - and installing this type of system can significantly raise the quality of life for many people. However, there are many different types of AC units on the market - and each is suited to different preferences. At Sun City Air, we want to ensure that our customers have the perfect type of air conditioner for them.

So, before you jump ahead and decide that a ducted air conditioner is perfect for you, there are a few factors you should consider first.

Your budget

While a ducted air conditioner is superior when it comes to cooling - it's one of the more expensive AC options on the market. Prices vary significantly, but most ducted air conditioners - including installation - will cost around $1000 per kW. A small four bedroom house normally costs between $9,000 and $12,000.

Area size

One of the most important factors to consider when deciding on the type of air conditioning that's more suitable for you, is the size of the area you're looking to cool. If it's a very small studio apartment, you probably won't need the capacity of a ducted air conditioner, as small wall mount systems will adequately be able to cool the area.

However, if you're looking to cool down a large area - like a large house or an office area - then a ducted air conditioner will likely be ideal. Once you've figured out the type of system that works best for you, you'll also need to determine the capacity needed. One of our friendly estimators can help you determine this, or you can check out our guide here.

Components of ducted air conditioning

When a ducted air conditioner is installed in a house, the physical appearance is very discrete. However, there are a lot of moving parts that are placed internally with the house. Ducted air conditioners are a central system that has an indoor evaporator coil that delivers cool air to each zone through the use of ducts.

Here we run through the components that make up a ducted air conditioners.

Indoor unit

The indoor unit pulls warm air out of a room and transfers it through evaporator coils which are cooled by compressed refrigerant from the outdoor unit. Passing the air over the coil cools it and it is then sent back to the conditioned spaces.

Outdoor unit

The outdoor unit compresses and cools the refrigerant. It is at the outdoor unit, when in cooling mode, that heat is released.

Duct work

Ducted air conditioners have tubes, otherwise known as ducts, that deliver cool air to multiple rooms A Technician will place this throughout your house to the designated zones and connect them to the indoor unit.

Thermostat

The thermostat is the main control for the entire air conditioner. A user will use this to determine timers, system settings, and set the desired temperature - along with other factors. The thermostat connects to the compressor so that it can control the entire system.

Zoning / Zone Motors

Where you have installed a zoned system - each zone can be turned on / off. In order for this to occurr each zone must have a zone motor - which opens and closes a blade/s which determine if / how much air is supplied to each zone. Which zone is turned on or off is set at the zone controller.

How to choose the size of the ducted air conditioner?

Deciding on the correct size for your air conditioner is of utmost importance. If the size is too small, the unit will work overtime and struggle to adequately cool the area to the desired temperature. If the unit is too big, it will cost a lot more to buy and install than is necessary and in extreme cases may lead to premature wear on the system.

In order to determine the correct size for an air conditioner, you can enlist the help of an AC estimator, who can conduct an inspection. Or, you can use a formula to help you understand what size is ideal.

Firstly, air conditioning capacity is measured in kW. Most Aussie households will normally require. around 160 watts of capacity per square metre to effectively cool, and there are 1000 watts in a kilowatt.

Next, you'll need to determine the size of the space to cool n square metres.

You then use the following equation to determine the size of system you will need to cool the entire space down to 24 degrees and 50% humidity (often referred to as comfort conditions):

[(square metres of the room) x 160 (average wattage)] ÷ 1000 (to convert into kW) = the minimum size of unit your space requires.

Whilst the above rule of thumb is useful - we would recommend you get professional advice before purchasing a ducted air conditioner.

How to prepare for a ducted air conditioning installation?

Homeowners should always enlist the help of an AC technician when installing a ducted air conditioner. The process is complicated and can be very dangerous if it's done by someone who is not qualified.

Because a technician will be doing the installation process, there's not much to do to prepare. However, it's a good idea to decide where you'd like the outdoor unit (usually somewhere hidden) and where you'd like the thermostat.

On the day of installation, make sure that the area that the components will be installed is clean and clutter-free. It's also a good idea to move anything that is valuable into a room that won't be getting worked on, so that it can't be damaged by dust or debris.
